Youth Leadership Principles and Practices

Developing the next generation of human-centered leaders.

Tomorrow’s leaders are shaped long before they enter the workforce. They are shaped by the relationships they build, the choices they make, and the opportunities they have to lead, serve, and grow. At the Chapman Foundation for Caring Communities, we partner with schools, nonprofits, and youth-serving organizations to help young people develop the confidence, character, and leadership skills they need to thrive in school, work, and life.

Our Youth Leadership course is more than a leadership program. It is an immersive experience that develops the executive functioning skills, social-emotional competencies, leadership behaviors, and human-centered mindset that prepare young people to make a positive impact wherever life takes them.

Because leadership cannot be developed through lectures alone, participants learn through reflection, practice, meaningful relationships, and opportunities to apply new skills in real-world situations. Through a 30-week leadership journey, participants strengthen their ability to lead themselves, build meaningful relationships, and positively influence others.

Three Pillars of Leadership

Through interactive discussions, self-assessments, guided reflection, team projects, leadership challenges, presentation practice, real-world application, and coaching and feedback, participants build the skills and behaviors needed to lead themselves, build meaningful connections, and inspire others.

The strongest leaders first learn to lead themselves. Participants develop self-awareness, strengthen executive functioning skills, learn to regulate their emotions, clarify their personal values, and build the accountability, personal responsibility, and decision-making skills needed to lead with confidence and integrity.

Leadership happens through relationships. Participants strengthen their ability to communicate with confidence, listen with intention, navigate conflict constructively, build healthy relationships, collaborate effectively, and foster trust and belonging with others.

Leadership begins by understanding the influence we have on those around us. Participants learn to model accountability, recognize and appreciate the strengths of others, adapt to different communication styles, build trust through authentic leadership, and lead with empathy, service, and purpose.

Designed for Organizations that Develop Young People

Our Youth Leadership course is designed to integrate into a variety of educational and youth development settings, including:

  • Schools and school districts
  • Career and technical education programs
  • Trade schools
  • Youth development organizations
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Homeschool cooperatives
  • Gap-year programs
  • Camps and extended learning programs
  • Faith-based youth organizations

Whether young people are preparing for college, entering the workforce, or discovering their purpose, this experience equips them with leadership skills they will carry for a lifetime.

Build Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Young people grow the most when the adults around them model the same leadership behaviors. That is why many organizations choose to extend this work through leadership development for staff and our Caring Workplace Program, creating cultures where youth and adults learn, lead, and thrive together.

Leadership is not just something young people learn. It is something organizations intentionally cultivate.

Invest in more than leadership knowledge. Help the young people you serve develop the confidence, character, and human-centered leadership skills to create meaningful impact in their schools, workplaces, communities, and beyond.
